Download: Android 2.2 For Motorola Droid

The Froyo build which we saw here and here is finally in the wild and ready for your personal viewing pleasure. Yes that sounded dirty on purpose as I crawled my lazy bones out of bed at 6:30AM on a Saturday, just for you (OK, that’s probably a lie. Who wouldn’t wake up for Froyo?).

So what do we have here? An apparent early 2.2 build for the Motorola Droid. I say early because it appears to have a ton of missing features from the Nexus One Froyo and also has a few bugs. With that said, the MyDroidWorld guys have made it easily installable via nandroid backup in both ClockworkMod and SPRecovery, so anyone with root access can check it out. When you are finished, you will keep root access and your custom recovery, so just make sure to backup your current settings in case something bad happens.

This also comes with a custom kernel, so you can overclock to 800Mhz right away.

(Want to root your Droid and try this? Check out our full 2.1 rooting guide.)

Early feature list:

  • It is indeed Android 2.2
  • New Market with “auto-update” feature
  • Apps2SD
  • Froyo Launcher with 3D app drawer
  • USB Tethering (no Wi-Fi tethering)
  • New camera software
  • Wi-Fi doesn’t work (fix coming soon)
  • Update: Might have JIT. See benchmark below.
  • Update: Gallery works, just took 30 minutes to load photos.

Update 7:37am: Had this 2.2 build up and running for a good 45 minutes now and I’ve got to admit that it is pretty damn fast. It seems like the longer you play with it, the faster it gets. Interesting. While the MFLOPS in Linpack aren’t there, check out this Quadrant benchmark I just ran. If only wi-fi worked…

*ROOTED USERS ONLY.

Froyo 2.2 Finally Running on Motorola Droid?

The guys over at MyDroidWorld who have the only known Android 2.2 build for the Motorola Droid, finally released some videos for your viewing pleasure. In fact, they plan on releasing a whole series of them and we’ve got the first two.

Droid Incredible Has Been Rooted?

Memorial Day = party day for Droid Incredible owners. In an attempt to revive Alldroid.org, a couple of their users apparently took on the task of trying to root the DI and succeeded! Yay! They now have superuser access and even some custom kernels pumping in 1.3Ghz to this already beastly device.

No instructions have been released, but should be “soon.” Video action below…

Install 2.2 Froyo on Motorola Droid

Good folks over Engadget confirmed that Motorola Droid and Milestone users will receive Android 2.2 as asoftware upgrade in the end of this month. It, certainly after upgrading the Nexus One, if they will release simultaneously for the U.S. and Rest of World. This is a good sign for owners of Motorola Droid/Milestone who apparently left no will to 2.1 but upgraded to 2.2 Froyo in a future not too distant future. These words come from an unofficial sources of Engadget. We only hope that everything will be brought quickly and maybe by the end of this month.
Here is a link on how to view Froyo 2.2 for Motorola Droid coming this month.

Flash 10.1 To Be Released In June

Adobe’s CTO gave us all a nice morning surprise today with the announcement we all sort of expected but had not actually been made official. Well people, it’s official. Flash 10.1 will land in the hands of developers at the Google I/O conference and then the rest of us some time in June…
We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android
smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a
general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number
and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which
we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.
How about that news to take us into the weekend? Thank you Adobe execs.

Video: Skyfire Beta 2.0 In Action

Sorry for the delayed post on this, but we’ve been a little busy playing with a new toy or two. We are back now though! And Skyfire 2.0 beta is what the people have called for!
If you are new to the Skyfire game, please ignore this post we did which included the leaked Skyfire beta. Why you ask? Because that version was almost pre-alpha compared to this latest release. And yes, the new version includes the ability to play Flash video (sort of). It does it in a round about way, but it definitely gets the job done.
There is one flaw though…the multi-touch is awful. Is it a deal breaker? Maybe. See for yourself…
